Roots of MODERN Exhibit to Open LongHouse Reserve Season on Saturday, April 20!
“I like ancient techniques and the cutting edge. The extremes are always more interesting than the middle.” – Jack Lenor Larsen
Roots of MODERN, LongHouse Reserve’s season-opening exhibit, will present an illuminating look at the non-Western art and irregular beauty that incited and inspired modern European art and architecture. The exhibition, which opens on April 20th, brings together a wide variety of non-European works—from East Asian ceramics to Native American fabrics and basketry to African and Oceanic furniture, textiles, and masks—from a period of over 5000 years. In so doing, it presents a justly eclectic representation of the non-traditional influences behind twentieth century modern art.
Roots of MODERN is a spectacular survey of this rich history and the heritage behind the designs of modern art and architecture. Curated by LongHouse Reserve founder Jack Larsen, the exhibit, which boasts two hundred pieces from LongHouse’s own collections, is open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from April 20 – June 30 and Wednesdays through Saturdays from July 1 – July 22. Exhibit hours will run from 2:00-5:00PM.
LongHouse Reserve exemplifies living with art in all its forms: collections, gardens, sculpture and programs reflect world cultures and inspire a creative life. LongHouse Reserve is a not-for-profit museum that encompasses nearly 16 beautiful acres in East Hampton. Each year the LongHouse Reserve presents major exhibitions in both the pavilion and the gardens.
