Ready, Set, Run! Shelter Island Hosts 40th Annual 10K Race on June 16th
Lace up those running shoes and get ready to hit the pavement at the 40th Annual Shelter Island 10K—set for Saturday June 15th, rain or shine. The island nestled between the North and South Forks of the East End will welcome runners of all levels, including former Olympians Bill Rodgers and Joan Benoit Samuelson. Touted as the most scenic course by Runner’s World Magazine, the Shelter Island Run is a fundraising event for East End Charities.
In honor of the 40 year celebration, this year’s race will welcome former Olympians Benji Durden and Kyle Heffner. Benji and Kyle both competed on the 1980 Olympic team, which was the same year the Shelter Island 10K was founded and the year the Olympics were boycotted. Benji and Kyle never competed, so we’ll be determining the winner with a special “Leave it on the Road, Even If It Takes 40 Years” race.
Other former Olympians and running legends will also join us including: four time NYC Marathon winner and four time Boston Marathon winner, Bill Rodgers, Olympic Gold Medal winner and first-ever women’s Olympic marathon champion, Joan Benoit Samuelson and running legends Jon Sinclair and Keith Brantley.
