Cape Resorts announces the reopening of The Pridwin Hotel and Cottages on Shelter Island, for Summer 2022. The project is in partnership with the Petry family who have owned and operated the property since 1961. The 49 room waterfront hotel, which has undergone an extensive two year renovation, includes four floors in the main house, two for guest rooms and two for public areas, along with 16 private cottages, and will welcome back guests in June 2022.

Nestled on 7+ acres overlooking Shelter Island’s Crescent Beach, the luxury destination resort will feature several exclusive amenities and facilities, including a private beach and pool services, water activities including sailing and fishing, a full-service spa, and a restaurant. “As a historic landmark on Shelter Island, we have sought to preserve the tradition of this exceptional property while enhancing offerings for year-round enjoyment”, says Curtis Bashaw, managing partner of Cape Resorts. “We are thrilled to reopen The Pridwin this summer and to be a part of the legacy that the Petry’s have created over the last 50 years.”

The classic American destination has been providing hospitality since it opened in 1927. Run by The Petry family since 1961, the partnership with Cape Resorts provides a once in a lifetime opportunity to renovate and operate the hotel with a more contemporary approach and state of the art services and amenities. “Our family could not be more excited for this next chapter of The Pridwin,” says Glenn Petry. “In Curtis and his team at Cape Resorts we have found kindred spirits dedicated to tradition, community and service. The restoration of the hotel and surrounding properties reflects our collaborative approach to taking a classic like The Pridwin and updating it for the needs and expectations of today’s guests.”

The design, under the direction of Colleen Bashaw, Vice President of Design for Cape Resorts, will be playful, yet classic and casual with an eclectic mix of old and new.  Colleen says, “We want our guests to feel that they are entering a timeless seaside resort. With the distinctly beautiful landscape of Shelter Island, our aesthetic for The Pridwin builds upon the hotel’s image of classic Adirondack summer camps and cottages.” Many of the key elements of the original structure will remain including the exterior white paint color with signature hunter green window casements to maintain a sense of familiarity for returning guests. “It’s important to all of us that The Pridwin still feels like somewhere people can ‘return’ to, where they can relive their fond memories while also creating new ones.”, adds Colleen.

The completely restored upper lobby will feature a reception and concierge area, along with original wainscoting and hardwood floors. Three dramatic chandeliers, salvaged from the 1927 dining room, will be rehung along the length of the space. Off of the lobby will be an intimate lounge surrounding the restored hotel fireplace with books and vintage ship models rescued from a former estate on the island. “We have found ways to repurpose many of the classic pieces that have been part of the hotel for so long, including the original wicker furniture in the lounge which so many guests will remember, as well as many of the dining room chairs and even some of the original china.”, says Colleen. Other interior furnishings will include custom ‘rag rugs’ in ivories and blues for the guest rooms, hand-brushed oak cannonball beds with rope trim, and a variety of patterned and weathered fabrics used throughout the hotel.

Below, the lower lobby has a separate check-in area complete with lounge and convenience shop ‘Edie’s’, named after Pridwin’s former matriarch Edie Petry. Adjacent is a ‘history hall’, featuring photographs, original property signage, room keys and hotel momentos from the past 95 years. “It’s imperative to our team that we are able to tell the amazing story of this property for years to come. There are so many artifacts that have been beautifully preserved.”, says Colleen. This level will also house the hotel’s game room, fitness space and Sea Spa, complete with three treatment rooms and a hammam.

The 1500 square foot 60 seat main dining room called The Terrace and adjoining horseshoe-shaped Crescent Bar will house wood and teal banquettes with hand painted checkerboard floors. Bespoke candy red, white and pink cabana stripe awnings will extend over the bar areas and window valances. Central to the room is a double sided fireplace which extends over towards the porch lounge and outside dining areas which will accommodate an additional 60 guests while also providing breathtaking views of the water. Under the direction of Executive Chef Drew Hiatt the restaurant will serve breakfast lunch and dinner for hotel guests and lunch and dinner and cocktails for outside visitors offering elevated American cuisine including fresh, locally caught fish and seafood, Shelter Island’s own produce, and wines from East End vineyards and beyond. Pridwin’s beloved freshly baked breakfast donuts will also make a return.

The Pridwin will offer two reception rooms on the main level, The Frost and Morgan rooms, both available to book for private dining, receptions or meetings, and each able to accommodate up to 30 guests. Additionally, the entire hotel will be available to buy out for destination weddings or corporate retreats.

The Pridwin Hotel also offers 16 private cottages named after various trees found on the island, such as Frasier, Black Cherry, Red and White Oak and Hickory. In keeping with the hotel’s adirondack identity, the cottages will each have their own unique design cues including wood burning fireplaces, kitchenettes and private decks with water views. Of the 16 cottages there are six studios, seven 1 bedrooms, and three 2 bedroom duplex cottages with cathedral ceilings, separate living rooms and two bathrooms.

The swimming pool and private beach which overlook the 120 foot east and west docks will offer both full bar and food services. Additional guest activities and rentals include bikes, paddleboards, kayaks, tennis, fishing and motorized water sports, among others. Newly landscaped stone lined pathways will run throughout the property with golf carts available to facilitate guest check-in and transportation between the main house and cottages. Additional transportation from the Pridwin to the Cape Resorts sister property, Barron’s Cove in Sag Harbor, will also be available via boat with guests having access to the amenities at both properties.
