SAVE THE DATE! PHOTOGRAPHER KIM MYERS DEBUTS RETROSPECTIVE COLLECTION "KOOL THING" ON JAN. 27th
Alchemy Gallery will present KIM MYERS: KOOL THING, a provocative, compelling retrospective covering over 25 years of renowned photographer Kim Myers’ career as its first show of 2023 and Myers’ debut gallery showing. “We’re happy to be the first gallery to show Kim’s stunning photography,” said Alchemy co-founder Sean Thomas. “Her work is an intoxicating mix of memory, beauty, love, and intimacy — it’s life itself. Seeing all the images in one collection is truly moving and undeniably powerful.”
The show is comprised of twenty-five photos from Myers diverse career. They will be on display from January 27th – February 10th at Alchemy Gallery’s Lower East Side venue at 55 Delancey Street in New York. Says Myers, “I’ve always seen fashion shoots as short stories in my head. Inspiration is everywhere and I tend to shoot what comes naturally. Although, give me a little glitter, a fearless woman and some leopard print whenever possible. Twenty-five years in, it still feels like I’m playing like I did as a kid. This collection captures the stories that have been telling and re-telling my whole life.”
The show is a collaboration with Alchemy Gallery and 360Bespoke, a boutique New York media agency. Says founder Jeremy Murphy, “It’s kismet. I feel like a matchmaker — I’ve been a fan of Kim’s forever, it’s an honor to pull together so many of her indelible images and celebrate their artistry with our partners at Alchemy.”
Myers work is known for its inquisitive eye and cinematic approach. Her discerning point of view has captured the attention of the world’s best-known publications – including Vogue, Elle, Marie Claire, and Glamour (where KDHamptons produced many fashion shoots with her). Leading brands like Moët, CoverGirl and Clinique also tapped Myers to shoot ad campaigns, and she has now expanded into directing, crafting video projects with high-end brands including New Beauty, Nest, and The Gap.
Myers’ romance with fashion and directing began early. As a child, she wrote, acted — and styled – original plays in which she’d create entire make-believe worlds. Her childhood was coloured by a combination of the expansive, All-American optimism of the Midwest with the cosmopolitan eclecticism of Amsterdam. These divergent cultures informed the refined authenticity and literate storytelling that is characteristic of her work. Myers followed her love of fashion to Paris where at age 18, she studied at the Paris Fashion Institute. She then returned to New York to intern for legendary photographer Francesco Scavullo while continuing her education at the Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons School of Design and School of Visual Design.
She began her professional career as part of the creative team to launch MAC Cosmetics in North America where she also helped create the ground-breaking “MAC VIVA GLAM” campaign which generated $450 million for AIDS research. She later moved to the editorial side for magazines, where an editor saw some of her pictures and hired her for her first shoot. From that point on, she’s followed her calling and camera all over the world to tell her stories through her unique lens. Myers is represented by PIX management.
Can’t wait to see this amazing show – see you there!
