The 2014 “Evening in the Hamptons” event benefitting New York City Mission Society was recently held at the estate of Ted and Dina Merrill Hartley in East Hampton. The evening – attended by nearly 100 people – raised nearly $60,000 to support New York City Mission Society’s programs, which help break the cycle of poverty for New York’s children, youth and families. The event committee was chaired by Mr. Stanley H. Rumbough, Secretary of the Board of Directors at New York City Mission Society, son of Mrs. Hartley and proud descendant of the Colgate and Rumbough families; and, Ms. Jean Shafiroff, philanthropist and previous recipient of the Dina Merrill Hartley Public Service Award.

“New York City Mission Society is extremely fortunate to have such dedicated supporters as Jean Shafiroff, Stanley Rumbough, and Ted and Dina Merrill Hartley,” said the nonprofit’s President, Elsie McCabe Thompson. “The funds raised at this event support our mission: to improve the lives of children, youth and families.”

“My family has been proud to serve as longtime supporters of the New York City Mission Society,” said Stanley Rumbough, the third generation of Rumboughs to be involved with the nonprofit. “This is an organization that cares about improving the lives of youth, children and families in our city that need help most. Core to the Mission Society’s mission are caring and compassion; both are what motivated us to get involved, and stay involved all of these years.”

“It’s a great privilege to be involved with the New York City Mission Society,” said Jean Shafiroff. “What I love most about Mission Society is that all of us involved work together as a family with one strong common mission. We all truly care about the future of the children.” This year’s event was a fun-filled evening of food, drinks, fireworks, and special musical guest performances by Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist, composer, and educator Arturo O’Farrill and singer Cole Rumbough. [Hamptonite Cole Rumbough will perform next at Le Cirque on November 24th and December 22nd, both at 7:30 pm].

Silent auction donors were: Botticelli Portraits Studio; Michel Piranesi; Le Cirque Restaurant; Anotella Lemos/Roa’s Restaurant; and, Maria Macconi/Giuseppe Zanotti necklace. Attendees also received gift bags with items donated by Toni & Guy Hair Meet Wardrobe. “Evening in the Hamptons” follows the success of an inaugural benefit hosted by longtime supporters Ted and Dina Merrill Hartley in 2011. This year’s esteemed committee was comprised of devoted philanthropists, including Peggy & John Bader, Cornelia Bregman, Missy Kilroy & Jay Moorhead, and New York City Mission Society President Elsie McCabe Thompson.
