Diana Petroff Butensky
Occupation: Founder and partner of Brandstyle Communications, wife of Dr. Steven Butensky, and mom of Maxwell, 17 months.
Current Residence: Summers in Water Mill
KDHamptons: How long have you been coming to the Hamptons? Why do you love it so much, and do you come out all year round?
Diana Petroff: Thirteen years. I love the Hamptons because it feels like I am on vacation, when I haven’t even left New York! It is a great mental break from the daily grind.
KDH: Describe your Hamptons home, and decorating style?
DP: My formula for a happy home is simple – live well, clean & comfortably with your family & friends. I am very much a homebody and I love things crisp & classic with a ‘Serena & Lily’ twist where my husband, son & I can be comfortable & happy. [A happy wife is a happy life!] My decorating style follows the mantra ‘less is more’ – my son has a million toys & accessories of his own, so that serves as the flair in my home! I stay very organized and maximize space using everything my home has to offer. I choose very simple pieces & rely on pops of color in either a Peter Beard photograph or painting…I certainly treat my shelves of family photos and books as accents for both my home office & living room. My bedroom is my place of serenity – I love ironed Frette sheets & all the colors are very calming.
KDH: Personal style: do you have a Hamptons “uniform”? Which designer do you
wear the most? What is your favorite fall fashion obsession?
DP: Everyone knows my uniform! Summer: tops [either Elizabeth McKay tunics or Saint James stripes] & white jeans…always. I tend to buy things I like in every color. Fall: I LOVE fur. I always stick to a classic pant & silky top with a fur vest. I splurge on handbags & shoes each season.
KDH: What is your favorite restaurant, and what is your favorite dish and drink you get
every time?
DP: My favorite restaurant in the Hamptons has always been….Sen Restaurant in Sag Harbor for the spicy tuna roll, but my favorite evenings are dinner parties with great music & friends. I love my chilled Domaine Ott rose!
KDH: Can you describe your perfect fall Hamptons day in detail for KDHamptons readers?
DP: After a busy work week in the PR world, I like to relax & get some much needed R&R on the weekends. When out in the Hamptons, I love to go to the children’s museum & pumpkin picking with my son Maxwell. In the afternoon I love to enjoy the crisp, cool air of the fall, with the sunshine & ocean breeze while sipping on rose & crudite with my husband.
KDH: What is the greatest part about your job? If you could snap your fingers and instantly have another career~ what would be your dream job?
DP: My job is all about people – bringing the right people & brands together. I have a black belt in matchmaking in the working world, social world & occasionally, in the romance world! If I could snap my fingers and have another career, it would love to be a full-time mother.
KDH: What is your best kept secret about the Hamptons?
DP: Won’t tell!
KDH: What are your plans for the holidays? Travel or staying out East?
DP: My husband is an outdoorsman…loves rock climbing & skiing….I love to recharge in the sun. Each year we split our holidays between going out west to Utah/Aspen or going south to Palm Beach/Harbour Island…so we each get a little fix! We also travel back to Cleveland Ohio where I am from…so my parents can get their fix of Maxwell.
KDH: Which is your favorite season in the Hamptons and why?
DP: SUMMER!! Why not?
KDH: If you could have anyone at your Hamptons dinner party [dead or alive] who would you invite?
DP: Adrianne Molina – the Lady Gaga of Vinyasa yoga, but if he’s unavailable I wouldn’t mind Kris Kardashian Jenner – she has created quite a business!
KDH: How do you “do it all” ? ….work, husband, family…share a couple
tips for busy KDHamptons readers?
DP: Lots of laughing & yoga.
KDH: You are a haute Hamptonite~ tell readers what is the biggest fashion “don’t” that must be avoided in the Hamptons?
DP: Don’t wear heels to a beach party. Don’t get your hair & makeup done for a casual lunch, but if you have an evening event go to Valery Joseph in Bridgehampton for the best blowouts! Avoid labels unless you’re reading them at the grocery store.
