Don't Miss The 29th Annual ARF Garden Tour on Saturday, June 20th!
McDermott garden
The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Inc. (ARF) announces its 29th Annual Garden Tour “Celebrating the Village of Southampton” to be held on Saturday, June 20 from 11am-5pm, rain or shine. One of the longest running garden tours on Long Island, the ARF Garden Tour will feature six magnificent gardens in the historic Village of Southampton, New York. The private gardens included on the tour are: the garden of Katharina Otto-Bernstein and Nathan Bernstein, The Fairwind Garden, the garden of Anke and Juergen Friedrich, the garden of Ashley and Jeff McDermott, the garden of Irene and Bernard Schwartz, and the garden of Margaret and R. Peter Sullivan. Free refreshments will be served at the Bernstein garden.
This year’s gardens are sure to be crowd pleasers. The cheerful garden of Katharina Otto-Bernstein and Nathan Bernstein is dominated by a riot of red, coral, yellow and white flowers, which provides refuge for this young family and their ARF dog Freckles. Trees were the inspiration for the garden at Fairwind, which is laid out to provide a variety of near and far views from the house and to entice the viewer outdoors and walk the entire property designed by landscape designer by Edwina Von Gal and landscape architect Christopher LaGuardia.

Surrounding the home of Anke and Juergen Friedrich, built by Grosvensor Atterbury in 1916 (best known locally as the architect of the original Parrish Art Museum), is a ten-acre pastoral landscape that evokes the classic estates of the 20th century incorporating stately evergreens, copper beeches, lindens, elms and spectacular Japanese maples. The garden of Ashley and Jeff McDermott consists largely of a sequence of distinct outdoor rooms linked by paths and defined by living and architectural elements including a formal knot garden, play lawn and rose garden.
The American-style garden of Margaret and R. Peter Sullivan, designed by Lear+Mahoney Landscape Associates gives modern interpretation to classical garden thinking. Although somewhat formal, this garden is designed for causal country living. Taking center stage at the garden of Irene and Bernard Schwartz is a fantastic orchid of nine mature apple trees. Noted arborist Ray Smith is the guiding hand behind the selection and shaping of all the magnificent trees on this property.
The 29th Annual Garden Tour is self-guided and ticket holders can view the gardens in any order. A cocktail reception immediately follows at Blue Haven, the legendary home of Lisa and Donald Jackson in the Village of Southampton. This year’s event is chaired by Barbara Slifka and Mark Fichandler.
Tickets for the tour are $85 each and can be purchased by calling 631-537-0400 x219, online at www.arfhamptons.org, the ARF Adoption Center in Wainscott, the ARF Thrift Shop in Sagaponack and the following garden centers: Lynch’s Garden Center and Mecox Gardens in Southampton & East Hampton, East Hampton Gardens, The Bayberry in Amagansett, the Sag Harbor Florist and Marders in Bridgehampton.
