Exclusive KDH Diary With Sag Harbor Photographer Franz Walderdorff: See His Sagg Main Series At Ruby Beets!
Legendary lensman and Sag Harbor resident Franz Walderdorff studied photography and design at the Lazi school in Stuttgart. He moved to New York in 1990 to begin his career as a beauty and lifestyle photographer.
“All my work is related to beauty whether it is in a studio, on location with a model, or backstage at a fashion show~ wherever it is, I feel good in controlled chaos,” shares Franz.
KDH first met Franz when we worked together at Allure, the beauty bible that has featured his work for the last nineteen years. Some of his clients include: Donna Karan, Christian Lacroix, Tommy Hilfiger, Fendi, jCrew, Garnett Hill, Spanish Vogue, German Glamour.
When he’s not in the studio, Walderdorff likes to spend time at the beach on the East End where his most recent series of personal images entitled “Sandspiele” [Sand Games] were created. “I kept looking at all the wonderful textures and movement and felt inspired.”
The result is a series of sixteen images that show the ever shifting movement and playfulness of sand that at first viewing might make us wonder what we are looking at… or where it could be.
All of the images were taken at Sagg Main beach in Sagaponic. Donna Karan recently featured the ethereal photos in her boutique, and they are available for purchase at Ruby Beets in Sag Harbor. Prices depend on the size & framing: a 47.5 x 34 print is $2,300 and a 22 x 28 print framed is $1,300.
KDH had not seen Franz in years so it was such a lovely surprise to bump into him at a recent dinner party in Water Mill and learn that he is now a Hamptonite too! Walderdorff lives in Sag Harbor with his wife Sabrina and their two daughters.
