Famed East End Artist Paton Miller Invites KDH Readers To Opening Night Reception Of His New Show, June 2nd!!
Paton Miller is one of my favorite East End artists. Equally loved and collected by the art world, celebrities and influencers, Paton’s work has a unique quality that the Parrish Art Museum describes as “seductive, complex surfaces full of scratches, abrasions, visible underdrawing and outlining. Sometimes straightforward, more often mysterious and somewhat elusive, his imagery has a rustic quality reminiscent of the Mexican muralists and Gauguin, and a sense of his subjects’ innocence and physicality.”
Miller attended the Honolulu Academy of Art, and after an extensive time traveling the world, he found his way to Southampton in his early 20’s. “My work is comprised of two basic approaches,” Miller has said. “The paintings and drawings done in the studio are often from my imagination; the work accomplished while traveling are direct observations of the places I visit and the people I meet. These two approaches complement each other well.”
Miller’s work is in the collections of the American Embassy in Abu Dhabi; the American Embassy in Bogota, Colombia; Heckscher Museum in Huntington, NY; Guild Hall in East Hampton; NY; The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, NY; and William and Mary College in Virginia.

Curator of the show Carole Reed tells KDH, “I am honored to show the recent works of Paton Miller. I discovered his studio about 7 years ago when we first moved to the Hamptons and realized quickly that not only is he a prolific genius who has such clear understanding of figure drawing and scale, he is uncompromising in his need to express himself through his canvases.
At first glance he feels like Diego Rivera with a layer of the satirist Daumier, and yet I feel a more natural magnetism in his work that from knowing him is based in his deep and abiding love of the ocean. His often frenetic studio filled with either young students or NPR barreling out of the windows is a respite for me and my children.”
About Carole Reed Designer, Curator:
In her 20 years as a designer and art consultant, Hamptonite Carole Reed has discovered that there is no substitute for authenticity. Believing that all objects have their own energies, her combinations of old and new objects partnered with rich textiles and organic materials along with the right levels of lighting and tonality create a sensory feast for the eyes. With offices in New York and Southampton she most enjoys projects that are from the ground up.
