The recently launched Tommy Hilfiger home collection has arrived just in time for Hamptonites looking to redecorate and spruce up for the spring summer season. Inspired by Tommy Hilfiger’s signature classic American sensibility with a twist, the Spring 2014 home line features pieces reminiscent of summer days at the beach and will follow with a Fall 2014 collection of preppy, collegiate pieces for home. “I’ve always been inspired by iconic American homes, and my wife Dee and I enjoyfinding great art and cool vintage pieces to create an eclectic vibe,” says Tommy Hilfiger. “I had a lot of fun combining those inspirations with my love of design to create the new Tommy Hilfiger home line. Our home collections embrace a unique take on the preppy lifestyle and all-American tradition. Every piece reflects the classic, American, cool spirit at the heart of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.”

Celebrating the brand’s preppy heritage, the Spring 2014 collection will launch with
bedding, bath, table top décor, and decorative accessories, and will be followed by an expanded Fall 2014 line that will also include furniture and rugs. Featuring the brand’s trademark red, white and blue aesthetic, the summer collection mixes a laid back vibe of East Coast heritage with West Coast cool. Hilfiger shares some of his style inspirations in this new KDHamptons design diary below:

KDHamptons: What is the inspiration behind your new home collection?

Tommy Hilfiger: I’ve always been inspired by iconic American homes, and our home collections embrace a unique take on the preppy lifestyle. Each piece reflects the classic, American, cool spirit at the heart of the Tommy Hilfiger brand.

KDHamptons: What are the most important elements to keep in mind when choosing your home décor?

Tommy Hilfiger: My wife Dee and I always try to incorporate a bit of the local culture into our homes while staying true to the sporty, clean look we love. Our house in Greenwich has a rustic, country vibe while our home on Mustique has an open, airy feel. Each of our homes is distinctively rooted in its local culture but never loses the unique elements that make it our own.

KDHamptons: In your opinion, what is the essential element to making a house a home?

Tommy Hilfiger: For me, home is all about family. It’s important that a home is cozy and welcoming, and it should always be a fun place where my children love to visit. Dee and I really work on all of the design elements to make sure our homes have a balance of luxury and comfort.

KDHamptons: Where do you find inspiration for the décor in your homes?

Tommy Hilfiger: My wife Dee and I enjoy finding great art and cool vintage pieces when we travel. Our taste is grounded with classic architecture and clean lines, but adding a few well-selected, exotic pieces is the best way to bring in the eclectic twist that makes it feel uniquely ours.

The decorative accessories collection brings echoes of Tommy apparel into home design, including: fabric-wrapped frames with rugby stripes, colorblock twists on traditional candle holders, hobnail vases in clear or navy glass, leather logo coasters, colorful wood storage trays, and preppy dot patterns on dishware and napkin holders. The Tommy Hilfiger table top collection easily transitions for chic outdoor entertaining with acrylic barware in nautical stripes and ice tubs with sailing-inspired rope handles, not to mention lobsters, anchors, and other seafaring icons adorning placemats and napkins.

KDHamptons: How does design influence your taste in home décor?

Tommy Hilfiger: I’ve always been a creative person and I am constantly finding new inspiration in everything around me. My taste in fashion and interior design are definitely connected and rooted in the same inspirations. Iconic American art is one of my enduring passions and a significant element in each of my homes. I’m a huge fan of pop culture pieces from the 1970s, especially Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Jasper Johns. The pieces these artists created are the ultimate combination of fashion, art, music and entertainment. Their art continues to be a great source of inspiration for me in both fashion and home design.
