Homenature Hosts Book Signing of Limited Art Edition of The End: Montauk NY, by Michael Dweck
Originally published in 2004, The End: Montauk, N.Y., by photographer Michael Dweck presented an idyllic and sexy portrait of the famed Long Island fishing community, and offered an idealized glimpse into the lives of the surfing subculture. Ditch Plains Press has announced a new limited edition printing of a 10th anniversary expanded art edition of Dweck’s classic collection, featuring 85 previously unpublished photos, and reflective essays by both Michael and artist Peter Beard. The exclusive edition will launch in the spring of 2016, but KDHamptons has learned that Homenature will be hosting a book signing event on Thursday, November 12th offering fans an advance opportunity to purchase the book [psst! this makes a really special Christmas gift].
From the dunes of Montauk’s secret surfing haunts, Dweck’s work tells a paradisiacal narrative about summer and youth, reflecting a place and a way of life both fading and being reinvented. The original run, as the New York Times noted, “sold out its first printing of 5,000 books in less than three weeks,” and became an instant classic, fueled by its groundbreaking narrative form, and now-iconic images.
A first edition copy of The End can sell for more than $10k on the private market. The expanded 10th anniversary art edition (limited edition of 500) examines the legacy of this original work, but also addresses the myriad changes Dweck predicted when he first turned his camera to Montauk in early 2000. Printed in Italy, each copy will be signed and numbered, and packaged in a handmade, cloth-lined clamshell case, with an exclusive 11×14 silver gelatin print, also signed and numbered. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of The End: Montauk, N.Y. will go toward maintaining the waterways and beaches of Long Island. Details for the event are listed below, don’t forget to RSVP.
