HOT NEW BOOK LAUNCH: BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR, A LOOK INTO MANHATTAN’S MOST VIBRANT TOWNHOUSE, BY JOHN DEMSEY
On Wednesday, October 11th, a Manhattan townhouse on a tree-lined street was bustling with some of the biggest names to celebrate the launch of entrepreneur, John Demsey’s new book, Behind the Blue Door—an explosion of color, pattern and art. Written by Emmy-award winning journalist, Alina Cho with images by renowned photographer, Douglas Friedman whose work has appeared in the likes of Vogue and Vanity Fair. Behind the Blue Door is an exploration of Demsey’s meticulously curated living space. KDHamptons NYC writer Brittany Eger shares a behind the scenes reel from the event HERE.
Past the understated exterior of the former Estée Lauder CEO’s six-floor townhouse belies a sumptuous feast for the eyes upon opening its blue front door. Every room of its five main floors has its own saturated color scheme, David Hicks–inspired geometrically patterned rug, vibrant fabrics, new and vintage furniture, art and photographs covering walls, and sculptures and decorative objects topping tables and filling shelves.
Demsey’s inspiration started with a pair of multicolored Louboutin boots, which became the palette of the living room rug. Working with interior designer and friend Bibi Monnahan, he carefully chose and positioned each piece of furniture, work of art, and decorative object, and mounted his enormous photography collection.
Wednesday’s launch event provided a first-hand look into Demsey’s imagination. Guests sipped on champagne while “ooo-ing” and “ahh-ing” at the tour de force of maximalist design. Eyes wandered from large stacks of coffee table books to framed pop-art featuring stars like Lizzo and Cardi B to color-coordinated sculptures and plenty of other hidden gems.
A chic event with names to prove it; June Ambrose, Molly Ringwald, Zac Posen, Fern Mallis, Amy Astley and Martha Stewart were a few of the most notable attendees. Throughout the night Demsey was seen mingling with guests and signing book copies for partygoers. Published by Vendome, Behind the Blue Door is now available for purchase online and in select bookstores.
