Designing Hamptonite, Marcia Patmos

Marcia Patmos, of M.PATMOS, honed her craft at the Rhode Island School of Design, but she has always had design in her blood. As a child, Marcia learned how to make or repurpose just about anything from her grandmother, who spent most of her time sewing, knitting and crocheting.

For the new M.PATMOS collection, Marcia continues to be inspired by art, architecture and design. She collects travel mementos, artwork and flea market finds. She always carries her camera to capture ideas, which she finds everywhere. “Anything can inspire a color palette, a new seam shape or a construction technique,” shares the designer.

Marcia says her goal is to “make easy, modern, understated, beautifully crafted clothing that feel as comfortable as wearing jeans and a t-shirt and become wardrobe essentials.” Her production techniques are socially conscious and eco-friendly, when possible. To Marcia, “there is something very special about an item touched by a human hand. By working with artisan communities, multiple families and even whole villages can be supported.” For Marcia, “change starts with very small things, and the importance of design is to open minds to new things, making for endless possibilities!”

KDH caught up with Marcia and asked her to share some of her favorite things about the East End, here’s what she had to say:

“My Hamptons LOVE LIST is so long….I will break it down by hamlets!” says the designer.

1. MONTAUK:

* Joni’s is the best for breakfast burritos, green juices, smoothies, lunch wraps and ice tea, etc…it is super healthy and delicious and Joni is so nice!
* The Crow’s Nest is a cute and delicious newcomer this year. A funny old place which was revamped in a very cool way. The food is local, fresh and delicious!
* Duryeas is a good old standby for a lobster roll and littlenecks. It’s kind of hidden around the pond and showcases perfect sunsets.
* Melet mercantile sets up camp in the summer in a garage in montauk – very worth a visit. http://vintagefashiondirectory.com/shop/melet-mercantile
* If you don’t feel like waiting in line or dealing with a crowd, the Hideaway is a good spot. Really good and cheap Mexican food hidden away in a boat yarn.
* I still miss Tauk the best little lifestyle store ever that closed last year – luckily, one of the owners still owns Smith & Butler right near where I live in Brooklyn. http://www.taukmontauk.com/ http://www.smithbutler.com/sb/?page_id=9
* Lenhart’s is a really cute place to stay – little efficiency cottages overlooking the ocean. It’s the one with the beautiful hydrangeas as you are driving out… http://www.montaukchamber.com/merchants/419

2. AMAGANSETT:

* The Clam Bar – super low key and delicious. i like to split the lobster roll and steamers.
* I like Jack’s Coffee an offshoot from the West Village – they have great coffee + other treats. You can sit outside in big adirondack chairs.
* Rube is a cute store in that little commons that also has Jack’s, Henry Lehr’s beach store and Hampton Chutney Company. They have a nice, edited selection of merchandise from children’s books to jewelry.

3. EAST HAMPTON:

* Turpan of course! Greg and Katherine have a great eye for design – from apothecary items to larger household items and great clothing and jewelry. Everything is so nicely displayed in their little store on that cute alleyway. http://www.turpanonline.com/
* Eres – just opened next to Turpan. They make the best swimsuits. The fabric is amazing. They are pricey, but worth it- great colors and fit!
* Jack Lenor Larson’s Longhouse Reserve – this is an amazing place. it is not far from the main shopping strip in town, but you feel like you are in another world. It costs $10 to get in and you can wander around his amazingly landscaped grounds and look at his incredible sculpture collection. http://longhouse.org/
* The Drawing Room gallery down a little alley off Newtown Road – they always have something nice to look at when I stop in. http://drawingroom-gallery.com/

4. SOUTHAMPTON:

* The Parrish Museum – I can’t wait for their new and fabulous looking home that is currently being built. http://www.parrishart.org/

5. NORTH FORK:

* Breirmere Berry Farms has delicious pies and blueberry juice if you feel like making a little side journey before getting onto 27 – it’s just into the north fork. http://www.briermere.com/

***and don’t forget the beaches! all of them are amazing! The Hamptons are a very special part of the world, and my world…..
