The Hamptons surf culture is growing exponentially. With surf schools in almost every hamlet, and everyone from 4th graders to Fortune 500 power brokers getting into the scene, KDH is here to help you stay in the cut!

Case in point: Let’s say you were trying to “casually” strike up a sunset chat with a sexy surfer this weekend at Ditch Plains in Montauk. You might ask, “So..would you like to come for drinks at Surf Lodge tonight?” To which he may reply, “No, the lip of that gnarly bomb really axed me.” Would you know what that meant- or skulk away thinking you were just insulted??

Allow KDH to translate! We discovered Riptionary.com, the largest online surf lingo dictionary with over 1,100 entries spanning surf cultures globally. Chief Surfologist, Scott A. Mathews founded the site in 2009 which features lexicon entries cataloged into five broad categories. Over 100 of these include examples of the terms use. Here’s ten of our favorites for you to try!

Slocal: Someone who lives at the beach during the summer but lives elsewhere in the winter.

Criddler: Someone who hangs with a crew just to do something but isn’t interested in surfing.

Blow Out You Sqeaker: What you say to someone who is hyperventilating and begins to panic after surfacing from a really long hold down. Example: “Dude, just relax. Your going to blow out your squeaker!”

Acid Drop: Not what you would expect!  It occurs when you take off on a wave and have the bottom suddenly fall out as you free fall down the face.

Boxed: To be in an inebriated state. We left that party totally boxed!”

Hodad: A beginner or non-surfer; One who has yet to master the art of surfing. Hmm, that would include KDH!

Beater: A well used [loved] surf vehicle that’s characterized by melted wax on the dash, seats or in the carpet and generally emits a musty swell from a stale wetsuit.

Accessory Man: Now we are talking KDH’s lingo!  For surfers however, it is a person who has every piece of surf gear imaginable and uses it all at the same time regardless of whether the circumstances call for it.

Barnwaller: Surfer exhibiting very poor style. Example: “That guy is barnwalling down the line.”

Axed: To be crushed, whacked or worked by a wave.
