Hamptons designer, author and makeover television personality Libby Langdon is the creative force behind New York City-based design firm Libby Interiors, Inc.  Her residential and commercial projects embodying her easy, elegant, everyday style have won widespread fans, and she is fast becoming known for her growing collections of branded home furnishings. Libby offers our readers the scoop on Seven Top Décor Trends for 2014, with tips on how to incorporate them into your own home in this new KDHamptons Design Diary below:

Langdon has been a design expert on HGTV’s Small Space, Big Style and shares her easy, elegant décor ideas on leading shows including The Rachael Ray Show, TODAY, The View and most recently, her NBC special with House Beautiful magazine, Daykeover with Libby Langdon, where she transforms her client’s home from drab to fab in less than 12 hours while sharing no-nonsense design tips and takeaways.  Libby’s design is currently on the cover of House Beautiful’s December/January 2014 double issue featuring a five-page story highlighting the show.

1. Bye-bye Beige, Hello Happy Hues! With Radiant Orchid as Pantone’s Color of the Year and accents including Cayenne and Freesia, 2014’s style palette is no shrinking violet!  I suggest using neutrals (like camel, cream, gray and navy) as a room’s foundation in big-ticket items like your sofa and rug and introducing trendy colors in your accessories and accent pieces like pillows, lamps and throws.  Or try a vivid hue as an accent wall behind your sofa or bed that can easily and affordably be repainted when you tire of the trend.

2. Orange remains to be a chic favorite accent of mine. Pantone’s hot orange for spring fashion 2014 is Celosia, but whatever the shade, orange adds a feeling of warmth and a great pop of color.  Introducing a new hue somewhere in your home can instantly revive a space that is looking dated and drab.

3. Singing the blues! From cobalt to peacock, blue will remain a rock star in 2014. Blue has always been the color my clients ask for most because it is livable, timeless and looks fantastic with so many other colors!  This year you will especially see lots of deep turquoise, navy and indigo, which made a big splash in 2013 and will continue to reign supreme.  Mix and layer multiple shades of blue in one room for a super stylish look!

4. Mix it up!  The days of matching furniture sets and bedding-in-a-box are gone! Up-to-the-minute design is about mingling multiple textures, shapes and surfaces, which also allows you to express your own unique style!  Mixing surfaces like glass-topped tables with wood and metal pieces in both gold and silver will add visual interest and make your room feel lighter and more open.  Layering textiles will add texture and soften the feel of your room.  You can do this by combining different fabrics like cotton, linen, silk and nubby knits in your bedding, drapery, throw blankets and pillows.

5. Clean, Classic and Comfortable. My signature design style has always been about using traditional elements with a modern twist.  This year you will see this approach reflected in many interiors because it is easy, elegant and works with our real, everyday lives.  Uber modern and minimalistic styles are definitely less trendy while people shift toward tradionalism in family and entertainment-friendly spaces.  Interior design is taking a traditional turn toward clean, classic lines and comfortable details that work best with contemporary lifestyles.

6. Wonder Wall! Wallpaper made a big come back in the past few years and continues to be a focus in 2014 design.  New formulas for easier application and removal are making the prospect of wallpaper less scary to homeowners.  The days of steaming, scraping and peeling are over!   Patterns and textures are as diverse as they’ve ever been and come in every color combination and style you could possibly hope for.  If you don’t want to commit to covering every wall in a room, wallpaper just one or create a focal point with a wide, floor-to-ceiling section of wallpaper.  Wallpaper a bookshelf backing for instant impact… an easy way to update to your space without being overwhelming.

7. Spa Style. Our worlds have gotten pretty hectic with no sign of settling down in 2014.  The movement toward finding balance and calm has naturally found its way into our interiors this year.  Serenity can be achieved in your home by using warm woods and a palette of soft blues, greens and sands.  Combining elements of earth, sea and sky is both relaxing and refreshing and, no matter the shade, always work well together.  Keep it feeling warm and cozy with soft lighting and fabrics that feel good to the touch. The goal is to create a peaceful space where you can rejuvenate mind, body and soul.
