KDHamptons New Design Obsession: Super Chic Handmade Rugs by Custom Cool!

Admittedly, it’s rare for me to come across a haute Hamptons design resource that I have not already heard of~ and I absolutely love it when it does happen! On a recent visit to my pal Randy Kolhoff’s Black Swan Antiques in Bridgehampton I discovered the super chic home collection called Custom Cool, which is based in Quogue. I can’t believe Doc & I don’t already have some of these perfect pieces in our beach cottage!

 

Custom Cool is a luxury design company that produces bespoke, custom rugs and accessories in exclusive designs incorporating: Pashmina, Nettle, Linen, New Zealand and Himalayan Wool and a variety of Wild and Culture Silks in an array of combinations. Founder & Design Director Eliza Gatfield [below] spent several years living in South East Asia, where she began her first ventures into commercial textile production. She shares, “The complicated technical, economic and ethical issues I discovered when working in Asia are at the foundation of the products & business of my company, Custom Cool.”

 

Just under two years ago Eliza opened the doors to Custom Cool’s first showroom and commercial design studio in Quogue, and works in partnership with GoodWeave, a program which ensures each rug is manufactured ethically, and child labor free. How great is that?

Any existing Custom Cool design can be customized to your needs. You can choose from hundreds of different colored wools and silks, and all designs can be altered fit your particular size requirements. Plus, many designs can be made as both hand woven rugs and kilims.

Here’s how the custom design process works:


Step 1: Meet Custom Cool

A designer will meet with you and/or your designer to discuss the Custom Cool rug collection along with our variety of yarns options. This is the perfect time to give  your design requirements regarding size, materials, color and any other aspect of the rug you would like to consider. TIP: Material and color swatches, other rug images and general themes/styles that inspire you will also help translate what sort of design you are looking for. With an agreed upon design direction, material selection and rug size, a quote will be created for the cost.

 

Step 2: Design

Several rug designs will be created for you in a variety of suitable colors using existing Custom Cool Designs or by creating a new design for you based upon the inspiration you have provided.  You will choose two options to be sent to Nepal or India for sample making. Within four weeks you will receive two – four 1′ x 1′ samples for your final choice/approval. With this selection made, the rug goes into full production.

 

Step 3: Deliver

Depending on the size, amount of colors and complexity of design within your rug, the weaving of the final product will take between 12-16 weeks for completion. The rug will be shipped directly to your home. Roll out and enjoy!
