Out Of Montauk” Series by Paul Brooke, Artist, Photographer And Waterman, Exhibits At Montauk Beach House featuring life-size cyanotypes using ultraviolet contact printing to record sea life in Montauk – paying tribute to the original form of photography invented more than 170 years ago by astronomer John Herschel.Montauk, New York, May 17th, 2024 – Today, Paul Brooke, artist, photographer, and waterman, announces his art show, “Out of Montauk” at Montauk Beach House with the opening reception on Friday May 24th, 5-8pm.Paul has been creating life-size cyanotypes using ultraviolet contact printing to record sea life in Montauk, paying tribute to the original form of photography invented more than 170 years ago by astronomer John Herschel.“As an artist and waterman, I’m compelled to tell the ocean’s stories by combining the original form of photography with my passion for fishing and craftsmanship,” said Paul Brooke. To date, this unique cyanotype process has never been used as a direct photographic expression to record life-sized images of marine species.Atlantic fish species in Paul’s “Out Of Montauk” collection were caught by himself or given to him by local fishermen. The collection is a testament to what we can create with our hands – from rod and reel fishing to the origins of photography using this unique contact printing process.“Out Of Montauk” represents various marine species found among the Atlantic Ocean during the warmer summer months off of Montauk Point. With the unknown effects and changes related to our environment and over-fishing, Paul is compelled to tell the ocean’s stories. Afterall, it could be one of our last chances to record these deep oceanic treasures in their natural forms using their bodies as specimens, which is important historical context. Paul aims to record as many marine species as possible during annual harvests, similar to how Japanese fishermen record their catches, through a printing process known as Gyotaku. The “Out Of Montauk” collection signifies Paul Brooke’s eye for design, natural beauty, and craftsmanship as well as his deep roots on the waters in Montauk and throughout the Atlantic Ocean.Every “Out Of Montauk” print is unique and can not be recreated. The collection holds a special place in the eyes and hearts of Montauk fishermen who’ve dedicated their lives to working the sea and providing people back on land with fresh seafood year round, risking their lives for every piece of seafood caught and consumed.
