Are essential oils really “essential”? Well a very big chunk of the beauty, spa, and wellness world thinks so — as do I. Choosing the essential oil to add to my steam room based on how I am feeling physically, or mentally each day is one of my guilty pleasures, so I am always on the hunt for new brands and ingredients that boast new healing properties. In my NEW KDHamptons Beauty Diary below, I catch up with Sujana Joyce Hansen, a product consultant for doTERRA, to learn more about their “Gift of the Earth” essential oils.

KDHamptons: What was the impetus behind launching the doTERRA line?

Sujana Joyce Hansen: We started with this business because we recognized a cyclical dependency in our society on a health-care system that promotes excessive pharmaceutical use, disempowers us, and doesn’t always actually even serve us or our health. We found, in contrast, that doTERRA’s essential oils are the most powerful and effective plant-based medicines, not only on the market, but in the entire world. The purity, efficacy, and availability of doTERRA’s new standard of certified pure therapeutic grade oils is beginning a paradigm shift in holistic wellness, and empowering people all over the world to take control of their own health.

KDHamptons: What are the key ingredients in your oils?

Susana: doTERRA’s oils contain absolutely no fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities and are free of all contaminants such as pesticides or other chemicals.  We created and maintain a rigorous standard of quality that subjects the oils to a series of third party tests assuring the presence of proper chemical composition and highest levels active compounds to guarantee safety and effectiveness.

KDHamptons: What was the inspiration behind developing the brand?

Sujana: The beauty of doTERRA is that not only does it offer the most incredibly powerful products on the market, it also offers the most incredible business opportunity. Anyone who resonates with the company’s mission can empower themselves to not only take control of their family’s health and wellness, but also create a sustainable, residual income, and run their own business. doTERRA supports this by encouraging a system of sharing dedicated to education for personal health empowerment.

KDHamptons: What are the oils most effectively used for?

Susana: There are currently around 60 oils—single oils as well as oil blends—that doTERRA produces that have been studied for their incredible and seemingly limitless medicinal properties.  Whereas pharmaceutical and OTC drugs only have an effect on bacteria, doTERRA’s CPTG essential oils are lipophilic, meaning that they have an effect on viruses as well. [There are extensive medical studies that show the effect of certain doTERRA oils against MRSA and other destructive viruses.] An additional benefit to choosing oils for healing support is that there are absolutely no harmful side-effects or drug contraindications.

KDHamptons: Lavender oil has become more popular than ever, can you tell us why?

Susana: One of our most commonly used oils is Lavender, which has been widely used for its calming and healing effects. When in doubt, use lavender! It has been researched and proven to be effective as an antidepressant, analgesic, anticonvulsant, anti-fungal, antihistamine, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiseptic, anti-tumor, anti-spasmotic, as well as having sedative and regenerative properties.

KDHamptons: How long is the shelf life of doTERRA oils?

Susana: doTERRA’s oils have a lifetime shelf-life if the cap is sealed and they are kept out of extreme heat and direct sunlight. Once opened, they will eventually lose some of their therapeutic value over a long period of time. Unlike all other oils on the market,  because of their purity doTERRA’s oils will maintain their therapeutic integrity for life if unopened, making them amazing for emergency preparedness.

KDHamptons: Where do you cultivate the ingredients for your oils?

Susana: doTERRA works closely with a global network of leading essential oil chemists and growers to select botanicals of the correct species, grown in their indigenous native environments, and carefully harvested at the right time. For example, our frankincense comes from Oman, where it is steam distilled from wild-crafted gum resins of the Boswellia frereana trees. Our lemongrass comes from specific regions in India where the climate, rainfall, soil, and other factors make the final product the most powerful and potent that it can be.
