KDHamptons: Randy, how would you describe the aesthetic of Black Swan Antiques?

Randy Kolhoff [pictured below]: Inspired! I find I am driven toward purchasing items that inspire thought and originality as well as being a practical piece of furniture. Occasionally, items are more thought provoking than practical. It happens. I have learned over the last 9 years of buying for Black Swan to trust my instincts. I try not to overthink a piece when it excites me straight away. Those are the pieces that tend to define our look and feel in the showroom.

KDHamptons: You acquire such interesting pieces ~ where do you find them?

Randy: I travel to some fun, out of the way markets throughout the country. Last week I was in 5 states, a couple auctions, and met with several of my favorite “pickers” who know my aesthetic and never disappoint. That is where I found this wonderful mid 19th century doctors surgical bag [below] complete with dozens of potions/remedies and a hand blown glass syringe. Fun stuff! I also bought this wonderful metal wine rack constructed from metal film reels, this includes a portion of the actual film Fargo which holds the wine bottles in place. There are some incredible craftsmen in this country with inspiring ideas and ingenuity, and I am lucky to know some of them well enough to get first dibs on some wonderful product.

KDHamptons: Do you think there is a color or trend of the summer season in terms of home?

Randy: The classic deep navy blue is back in a big way, not that it ever left, but it is being uses in more clever ways, textured and with bold prints. I also see a yellow trending in a variety of shades. These classic colors echo the east end with our incredible sky and ocean. It’s no wonder we are bringing them indoors more and more.

KDHamptons: Can Hamptons clients hire Black Swan to decorate their home?

Randy: We supply a multitude of services to help the homeowner create their own distinct aesthetic. This includes full service custom furniture designed for site specific locations, including the popular zinc top dining tables and antique window buffets. We also have an incredible selection of over 800 fabrics that we can apply to our sofa and soft goods line. These items can be designed and delivered with a 35 day lead time, all made in America. These services are available at very competitive price points.

KDHamptons: Are lots of shoppers coming in who are decorating their new apartments in the much buzzed about Watchcase Factory in Sag Harbor?

Randy: We have several excited new owners at the watchcase building. Our look and feel lends itself perfectly to the unique style of that historic building. This includes a handsome vintage 1950’s industrial clock with the Bulova logo on full display. I am excited to see that building come to life again with a unique Sag Harbor flare. You can bet Black Swan Antiques will be a part of that blending of history and style.
