On Tuesday, September 10, Outstanding in the Field returned to EECO Farm in East Hampton for a feast in the field prepared by guest chef Jason Weiner of Almond. KDH was excited to check out this super cool concept: A roving restaurant without walls that travels around North America to stage dining events literally at the source, introducing guests to the farmers and food artisans who provide the ingredients for the meal.

The Outstanding in the Field’s trademark [and team transportation] vintage red bus rolled out to Long Island, stocked with all the accoutrements for a fabulous farm feast. The pioneering farm-dinner series has inspired pop-up supper clubs across North America and around the world, staged the private dining event set between the soil and sky at EECO Farm. The multi-course meal was repared in the field by guest chef Jason Weiner and his kitchen crew from Almond, paired with wines from Channing Daughters Winery, my personal favorite was the Cuvee Tropicale which surprisingly had pineapple notes!

Outstanding in the Field outdoor dining events place loooong signature table at country farms and ranches, in urban gardens and sea caves, on mountaintops and sandy beaches. Wherever it goes, OITF’s mission is the same: To re-connect diners to the land and the origins of their food and introduce them to the local farmers and food artisans whose good work brings nourishment to the table. Ingredients for the meals are often sourced within inches of diners’ seats. After a tour of the host site, everyone settles in: farmers, ranchers, fishermen, food artisans and guests serving each other at the communal table.

“Jason Weiner and Outstanding in the Field go way back,” said OITF founding chef and artist Jim Denevan. “We’ve done six events with Almond and can’t wait to see Jason and his team each summer. They always create a deliciously exciting menu. And EECO Farm’s gorgeous fields provide a charming setting for our table.” Jim jumped on an apple crate and spoke to the hungry Hamptonites about how OITF came about, sharing his personal passion for the farm-to-table lifestyle.

Since 1999, when Denevan hosted his first farm dinner in his hometown of Santa Cruz, California, Outstanding in the Field’s culinary caravan has staged more than 400 events, welcoming nearly 50,000 guests for feasts in the U.S. and Canada as well as Europe and South America. The event started with a glass of wine and welcome hors d’oeuvres, followed by a tour of the EECO farm, and a four-course meal paired with wines [below]. This was such a special event, perfect for the Hamptons foodie & farm fans. Be sure to check the Outstanding in the Field’s website for the calendar of upcoming fall events at :
