SOUTHAMPTON ARTS CENTER OFFERS FULL SLATE OF PROGRAMS FOR JULY
Wynton Marsalis to Perform at SAC in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center,
Hamptons Jazz Fest, and the Silk Road Group

The summer season is in full swing at Southampton Arts Center  [SAC – southamptonartscenter.org]. As part of an expanded partnership with Hamptons Jazz Fest, SAC will present internationally acclaimed musician Wynton Marsalis in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center and our Georgian partners from the Silk Road Group. July will also feature the fifth annual Architecture + Design Brunch and Tour, new wellness and kids’ programs, Maj Jongg, and so much more.

Here’s what’s on deck in July…

Studio @ SAC: Figure Drawing Workshop – Fridays, July 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 @ 1 PM
Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Limited availability – registration is required. southamptonartscenter.org/studio

Kids: Ramblin’ Dan’s Freewheelin’ Band – Wednesdays, July 6, 13, 20 + 27 @ 9:30, 10:30
+ 11:30 AM, 12:30 PM Ramblin’ Dan’s Freewheelin’ Band provides high energy and engaging music classes for kids 0-4 years old. Driven by playful musicality and skillful guitar work, sessions are about having fun in pressure-free and comforting atmosphere, helping kids gain confidence.

Wellness: TORCH’D with Isaac Boots – Saturdays, July 2 + 16 @ 9:30 AM
Lead by Isaac Boots, TORCH’D is a vigorous flow of body resistance, dance conditioning and intense targeted repetition to fire up and transform your body.

Talk: An Evening with the Works of John Zieman – Friday, July 8 @ 6 PM
Join SAC for an immersive viewing experience of the Video Art works of John Zieman. The artist’s works range from purely abstract visual play, to communicating the poetry of interior mental spaces and moods. He will share a wide range of formats, from earliest video tape to 4K digital files, from cellphone to studio cinema cameras. This event will include an intimate viewing experience followed by a Q&A with the artist.

Join SAC and Hamptons Jazz Fest as we present seven-time Grammy nominee Bobby Sanabria & Quarteto Ache! For an evening of jazz on the West Lawn. Guests should bring a blanket or beach chair.

Film: Wild & Scenic Film Festival – Sunday, July 10 @ 6:30 PM
Join SAC and Peconic Baykeeper an evening of curated films presented by the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Tour, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act. The evening will begin with a conversation about our water between journalist Alexandra Talty and Baykeeper Pete Topping, followed by a series of films that celebrate and call for action to protect and restore our precious waterways. This is an outdoor event – guests should bring a beach chair or blanket, and are welcome to bring a picnic.

Fifth Annual Architecture + Design Tour – Thursday, July 14 @ 11 AM
Celebrating modern architecture and landscape design in Southampton, SAC’s fifth annual Architecture + Design Tour will feature a private brunch, architectural panel with noted East End architects and landscape designers, and exclusive tours of four select Southampton properties.

Workshop: Mah Jongg – 6-week Session Begins Thursday, July 14 @ 1:30 PM
Learn to play the fun, challenging, and thought-provoking game of American Mah Jongg. This six-week  course covers all aspects of the game including understanding the card, selecting and playing your hand, and pick up playing strategies all leading to the ultimate Mah Jongg.

Please join us for a Cornell Cooperative Extension ArtSEA night out at SAC. ArtSEA Create + Sip events allow guests to learn about local species and habitats while creating marine-themed art. Proceeds directly support CCE Marine’s work.

Talk + Luncheon: Race of Hope to Defeat Depression with Hope for Depression Research Foundation
– Friday, July 15 @ 11 AM
Hope for Depression Research Foundation (HDRF) founder and chair Audrey Gruss will host a discussion on the four pillars of mental health. Curated by SAC founding co-chair Simone Levinson, the panel will feature experts in nutrition, exercise, mindfulness, and sleep, as they explore the pillars of mental health and the management of mental wellness. Panelists include David Lynch Foundation CEO Bob Roth, yoga instructor and author Eddie Stern, and psychiatrist, public speaker, and author Dr. Norman Rosenthal. The panel will be followed by a luncheon and preview of AKRIS’ 2023 collection. The event marks the run up to the Week of Hope, culminating in HDRF’s seventh annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression.

Film: Cat Daddies with Hamptons Doc Fest – Sunday, July 17 @ 8:15 PM
Directed by Mye Hoang, Cat Daddies is a heartwarming collective portrait of eight unique men whose lives have been changed by their love for cats. Some of these men will navigate unprecedented challenges with the help of these feline friends. The film is a refreshing and timely exploration of modern masculinity and the unlikely bond between man and cat. Q&A with the director to follow.

Talk: Hamptons Tech Week with James Lane Post – Tuesday, July 19 + Wednesday, July 20 @ 11 AM In collaboration with James Lane Post and Ethereal, SAC is bringing the world of web3 to the Hamptons. This event will educate on how web3 is enhancing and progressing a variety of industries such as art, real estate, sports, environment, and fashion, while giving industry professionals a space to network and learn.

Film: The Inventor with Southampton African American Museum – Friday, July 22 @ 7:30 PM
Join SAC and Southampton African American Museum (SAAM) for a screening of the short film The Inventor, followed by a Q&A with film producers, director, and cast, moderated by SAAM founder Brenda Simmons and Dr. Anita Farrington of STEM Impact LLC. In partnership with Art & Soul

Cocktail Party: Art & Soul VIP Cocktail Reception – Friday, July 22 @ 9:30 PM
VIP opening reception for Art & Soul Hamptons, featuring a meet-and-greet with SAAM founder
Brenda Simmons, networking, meeting with Art Walk artists, and Champagne toast.

Art & Soul Hamptons is designed to highlight, showcase, and celebrate art created by influential and emerging Black and Brown artists living within the Hampton community, and beyond. The three-day event will encourage people to visit Southampton to support, engage, and connect with artists of color. This experience will consist of an art walk, live music and entertainment, soulful cuisine, supporting Black-owned businesses, and learning about the Native American Shinnecock tribe.

Kids: Cornell Cooperative Extension Touch Tank – Thursday, July 28 @ 3 PM
Cornell Cooperative Extension brings the bay to SAC! This hands-on presentation introduces
participants to local marine life with CCE’s traveling touch tank. Observe and hold live sea animals such as clams, scallops, shrimp, crabs, snails, fish, algae and more.

Film + Panel: Captain Phillips – Friday, July 29 @ 8:15 PM
Directed by Paul Greengrass, the film tells the true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years. Prior to the film will be a panel discussion with Captain Richard Phillips and special guests.

Art: Figures Transformed Opening Reception – Saturday, July 30 @ 5 PM
Curated by Christina Mossaides Strassfield, FIGURES TRANSFORMED showcases the works of artists Deborah Buck, Hal Buckner, and Strong-Cuevas. Using the figure as the central imagery in their work, the artists inspire imagination, exploration, and consciousness.

Live: Hamptons Jazz Fest with Bakithi Kumalo and Friends – Saturday, July 30 @ 8 PM
Join SAC and Hamptons Jazz Fest as we present legendary Grammy-Award winning bass player Bakithi Kumalo and Friends for an evening of jazz on the West Lawn. Unless otherwise noted, films and jazz concerts take place outdoors on SAC’s West Lawn. Guests are encouraged to bring beach chairs or a blanket, and may arrive early with picnics.
