STILL MOURNING CYRIL'S CLOSING IN MONTAUK? DROWN YOUR SORROWS AT THESE FOUR "REAL DEAL" JOINTS
#RIP! Everyone loved hanging at Cyril’s Fish House because of it’s swashbuckling owner. Cyril always knew how to “kept it real”, and posers simply didn’t saddle up to the bar here. With recent news of this iconic landmark closing, we will all miss his delicious daiquiris [with an extra floater for locals], rum punch, piña coladas, and backyard antics. But don’t fret, here are FOUR other “real deal” Montauk bars where you can drown your sorrows over Cyril’s closing, and not be surrounded by city slickers in a Fedora.
- The Dock Montauk, 1 Montauk Harbor; Montauk: Since 1973, The Dock has been an oasis for most Montauk regulars. Leave your credit cards, children, and cell phones at home, as this bar is not for the faint of heart. Engage in conversation, drink a draft beer, and as the saying goes at the dock, “we feel that in order for a joke to be funny, it must be told at someones expense.”
2. The Montauket, 88 Firestone Road; Montauk: Experience the best sunset on the east end at The Montauket. Overlooking Fort Pond Bay, enjoy fried shrimp on a picnic bench with a glass of rosé. Exactly how summer should be.
3. The Shagwong, 774 Montauk Hwy, Montauk: After switching ownership last fall, the Shagwong is an ultimate dive bar destination. The scratched wooden floors with its 1920s façade is what makes this 50 year old Montauk spot unique.
4. Liar’s Saloon, 401 W Lake Dr, Montauk: Fisherman photos and antique boating gear line the walls of this local bar, making the authenticity of The Liars Saloon is hard to beat. For over 30 years this small tavern has been almost invisible which makes it a local favorite. Fridays are a can’t miss night here, as the karaoke party has become popular among visitors and locals alike.
