Uh-Oh!!! Hampsters Are On The Loose At Bookhampton!
BookHampton has brought Miles Jaffe’s term [from his infamous 2008 book “Hamptons Dictionary”] “Hampsters” to the literary set with their new “Hamptons Hipster Lit” section. According to Kim Lombardini, the marketing manager of Bookhampton and co-curator of the Hamptons Hipster [aka the “Hampster”] Lit shelf, Hampsters are not part of “the pale Willamsburg crowd. Hampsters spend time in the un-Hamptons, the less glitzy, less glamorous parts where year-rounders live and work.” They are reading books [natch], but Lombardini further distinguishes their behavior: “They go surfing, spend time in the sun, and go out in Montauk in the evening.” Hmm, not far from this KDH writer’s ideal day.
While the fourteen reads currently on BookHamptons’ celebrated shelf include Nick Hornby’s “High Fidelity” to “Lush Life” by Richard Price, you can be sure Jaffe’s original lexicon – coined by publishers as “a wicked social satire and hysterical lexical send-up of the rich and famous who flock to the Hamptons each summer and the locals who count the minutes until Labor Day when they leave” — is no where in sight.
*Check out this special section of the store but be forewarned that this crowd is not a fleeting trend, simply leaving at the end of the season. “Hipsters and Hampsters are our future in books,” muses Ms. Lombardini.
